Barentsburg
The tour goes to the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, the second largest settlement on Svalbard, with about 300 inhabitants. Previously the majority of the inhabitants i Svalbard lived in Pyramiden, Grumant and Barentsburg. Today Barentsburg the only remaining of the three.
During World War 2, the entire city was razed to the ground, yet there is a sense of history about the place, with Lenin on top of the hill, looking over his people. Barentsburg is a "company city" and operates primarily in mining and some tourism.
If you want to get a closer insight into the daily life of the settlement, there is a possibility of a guided tour.
